Choosing the Right Fire Safety Valve for Your System
Every fire protection system — wet-pipe sprinklers, deluge water-spray, or a simple hydrant riser — depends on a small set of valve types, each doing a distinct job. Specifying the wrong one doesn't just waste budget; it can compromise the system's response time.
OS&Y (outside-screw-and-yoke) gate valves are isolation valves, full stop. Their job is to be visibly open at all times and to give a clear, unambiguous indication if someone has closed them — which is why tamper switches are so often specified alongside them on supervised systems.
Alarm check valves and wet-alarm sprinkler valves sit at the base of a riser and do two things at once: they act as a non-return valve, and they trigger a local water-motor gong or electrical alarm the instant water starts flowing through them, because that flow means a sprinkler head has opened somewhere on the system.
Deluge valves are different again — they hold back water completely until a detection system (heat, smoke, or a manual pull station) tells them to open, at which point they flood an entire zone of open nozzles or sprinklers simultaneously. They're specified for high-hazard applications where you want every nozzle in a zone discharging at once, not just the ones nearest a fire.
When you're speccing a project, start from the system type (wet pipe, dry pipe, pre-action, deluge) and let that dictate the valve family. From there, size, end connection (flanged vs grooved) and certification requirements (UL/FM vs local ISI/IS standards) narrow the exact product.
