Grooved vs. Flanged Pipe Joints on Fire Main Installations
If you've walked a fire-pump room or sprinkler riser installed in the last decade, there's a good chance most of the isolation valves and pipe joints are grooved rather than flanged. The reason is almost entirely labour cost and schedule.
A grooved coupling clamps around a pre-grooved pipe end with a two-piece ductile-iron housing and an EPDM gasket, and it's tightened with two bolts. No welding, no flange-facing, no gasket-torque sequence to get wrong. On a large riser with dozens of joints, that adds up to real schedule savings.
Flanged connections still earn their place where a joint needs to be rated for higher pressure classes than standard grooved hardware supports, where a valve simply isn't available in a grooved-end variant, or where a client's specification explicitly calls for flanged construction for maintainability reasons.
In practice, most modern fire-main designs mix both: grooved couplings and grooved-end butterfly valves for the bulk of the riser and branch runs, with flanged connections reserved for pump suction/discharge headers and any point where a higher-pressure-rated valve is required.
